Service and Leadership
Service learning projects are an integral component of the YWCA's programs for teens. These projects empower youth to become engaged in their communities and offer meaningful change - for others as well as the teens themselves. Teens choose and implement their own projects, developing stronger decision-making, communication, and organizational skills. Such projects also help youth develop a sense of their own identity, improve their self-esteem, and become more independent.
Teens created holiday centerpieces and served dinner at a meal program for the homeless. Examples of past service learning projects:

“The YWCA’s program was just what I needed.” Lissa always thought she’d go to college. She liked school and got good grades – until her junior year. She started hanging out with a new group of friends and cutting class. Then she found out she was pregnant. Feeling she didn’t have any other options, she dropped out of school and got a job after her daughter Trinitee was born. She soon realized that, without a diploma, she simply wasn’t earning enough. That’s when Lissa found out about the YWCA's program on campus. With hard work and the help of her case manager, Lissa graduated in June. |
