Brighter Futures for All

The YWCA’s Successful Futures for Youth program offers young mothers one-on-one support designed to help open doors to higher education and the workforce.

Staff help each young woman assess her strengths and develop a plan for academic and employment success. They’re connected to educational opportunities, such as GED classes, vocational certification programs and college.  Staff mentor young mothers as they explore careers, identify and apply for job openings and begin employment.  Workshops are provided on a wide range of topics, including parenting, resume writing, literacy and healthy relationships.

Program Details:

  • Open to pregnant and parenting young women 17 to 21 years old

  • In addition to GED courses, program participants have the opportunity to pursue vocational and certificate programs

  • Campus tours and workshops on financial aid are offered to help make higher education a reality

  • Program participants attend workshops on job readiness and crisis management skills

  • Case managers link teens with community-based services such as day care, health care, housing and mental health services necessary to build the support networks for long-term success

  • Recreational and social activities are also offered throughout the year

  • For more information on this program, please call (585) 546-5820.

    SUCCESS STORY:

    Don't Ever Give Up

"You can still finish high school and even go to college."

Takeya graduated from high school in 2010 as part of the YWCA's School-Age Parents program.  Through Successful Futures for Youth, she continues to work with her case manager on many new goals, including college.  She started classes at MCC and plans to study nursing.

"I’m thankful for everything that my case manager went through with me and the support that she gave me."

To other young mothers, she says, "Don't ever give up, no matter what anyone says."
