Passport to Family Fun
We are thrilled to announce that the women and children of the YWCA will have the opportunity to explore the Strong National Museum of Play this summer thanks to ESL Federal Credit Union and their sponsorship of the museum’s ‘Passport to Family Fun’ program. We appreciate both ESL and the Museum’s ongoing commitment to give families in need the opportunity to take time to play together with their children while reinforcing the developmental benefits of hands-on learning activities. News ArchiveYWCA Featured in RBJ Article About Need for Homeless Services
The YWCA of Rochester & Monroe County in conjunction with the Homeless Services Network of Rochester, a collaborative of service providers who work with the homeless, and the Supportive Housing Network of New York, are hoping to raise awareness about how proposed budget cuts would affect some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
Although the number of individuals placed in emergency housing has doubled in the last ten years, the full impact of the current economy on local families is not yet known, as the latest numbers were published in 2008.
Studies often do not include the number able to find temporary shelter with family or friends, only those who sought housing assistance from the County, so the actual number needing shelter is much larger.
Last summer, in response to the growing need in our community, the Rochester Area Community Foundation awarded the YWCA a grant which allowed us to purchase additional beds for our Emergency Housing program. As a result of the purchase of additional beds, in 2009 the YWCA served three times the number of children served in 2008 in our Emergency Housing program. The City of Rochester also awarded the YWCA a grant last fall to fund renovations in Emergency Housing to provide appropriate housing for women with multiple children.
Carrie notes in the RBJ article, “We’re working twice as hard to field calls, and certainly a lot of people are seeking housing now, but it is too early to see what the full impact on the community will be.”
The YWCA is now serving more women and children than ever before, providing help and hope in times of need.
